Waveless

#Avicci #harmonies #EDM_kinda #kick #Stevie_Smith

EDM master Tim Bergling chose the name Avicci when he was 19, taking it from Avīci, the Pali word for the lowest level of hell in Buddhism. "Avīci" translates as "without waves," referring to interminable suffering. And he did suffer, with health issues and anxiety, as this shy and insecure boy became one of the most popular DJs in the world. He played his final concert on August 28, 2016 in Ibiza, retiring at the age of 26. Two years later he killed himself. Netflix offers a new documentary on his life ("I'm Tim") and a film of his last concert.

Lyrics

You were waving for the crowd With the kick, kick, kick pushed loud All those hands of hearts held high In the warm Ibiza sky

All that love – did you know who it was for On the stage, as you rocked the decks once more Or was it lost in that confetti cannon’s roar Leaving you cold, and too far out from shore

You were waving for the crowd With the kick, kick, kick pushed loud All those hands of hearts held high In the warm Ibiza sky

You were waving (yes, you were waving) You were waving (I know you were waving) You were waving (you must have been waving) (all your life) Were you waving? (I think you were waving) (all your life) Were you waving? (I think you were waving) (all your life) Were you waving? (I think you were waving) (all your life)

Now you're waveless

This is a lovely tribute to an artist… one I did not know …. I am greatful for your liner notes and how your lyrics and music captures the story and conveys so much —— the ending is so sad after such a delightful tune. This touches my heart and inspires me to read more about them. Lovely song!

I had never heard of Avicci so this song was not only highly entertaining but educational! I love the beat and your vocals are sweet! I enjoyed my listen very much!!

I had just listened to a track by @loustheny (https://write.fawm.org/songs/305531) that made me think about all the psychich energy that must go into keeping everyone dancing) Then your piece and the liner notes hit that theme even harder. Thinking about whether a waveless place would also be without a beat and whether that would feel relaxing to a DJ who had given too much.

Never heard of Avicci before... I keep hearing about Djs gone away too early... The TV channel released 5 documentaries about DJ Mehdi a few weeks ago and I was amazed by his story. You capture the spirit of Ibiza elctro concerts, it seems. It is hard to gess which DJ your song is about without the liner note. Clever play with words, the waving as a negation of wavless hell... Also clearly an easter egg for the happy few.

Special song. Very fine. The music sounds crazy funny. Even psychedelic in that solo intermezzo. Cool how you let those drum fall away. And after that you experiment with harmonies. Cool. Oh and the end chords! Well done and weird and special at the same time. #tit4tat

So many layers here :) The lyrics, the lush arrangement, the meanings. I had no idea about Avici's name and tragic story. I love the synths dancing like light!! Lovely.

Wow... I didn't know any of this. I, of course, had heard some Avicci but I wish I was more familiar. Very cool and creative tribute, I appreciate how this references something clearly deeply personal to the artist, as opposed to a simple eulogy. The rhythm in this piece, between the music and the marching vocals is perfect! #tit4tat

Not waving is one of my favourite poems, i actually read it aloud once in the room it was written when i lived round the corner from Stevie Smith's beloved Avondale Road as featured in other poems. anyway that delighted me from the start and this is a lovely twist on it. the insistence/doubt/irony works so well -"you must have been waving" right? ...right?? and i love the ear candy sounds, really well packaged song and a great angle

I've heard the waving/drowning metaphor before, but connecting it to waving at a concert is a new view of it. The EDM influence of the music seems appropriate.

This has a pretty unique sound and I like how much you do with only a few sounds, and I like all the different sections. I liked the double vocals on the chorus. Singing-wise, my favorite part was the verse with 'All that love' because of how you stretch some of the words, that makes for an interesting rhythm. Also your voice sounds really nice there. Also really digging that super funky instrumental middle section, a LOT happens there in a short time. In the last part I liked the repeating, stereo-jumping, but also constantly changing, overlapping 'waving' lyrics, and then the sung chords of the last line. Man, this song really keeps changing.

The soundscape is so smooth like lotion in my ears. #tit4tat

Nice song, well recorded, good vocals, cool arrangement. I love the twiddly instrumental break! The perfect contracting element. Thanks! (Interesting story. I'll have to watch the Netflix.)

Pretty catchy song on a kinda sad subject. Love the interpretation! Beautiful tribute! Love the arpeggios synth part around the minute!

Great tribute, and it stands on it's own as a sort of peculiar portrait of someone, even if the listener doesn't know who it's about. The insertion of the line "All that love – did you know who it was for" is interesting, just one of a few clues that something is amiss with the hero of the song. That line reminded me of Lucinda Williams' line "Didn't you think anyone loved you?" in her heartbreaking song "Sweet Old World." In yours, the tragedy is a bit more hidden in the cheery sounding backing. But it's there, and makes the whole thing much more poignant.

I like everything about this song. It's wonderfully quirky and original. The swirling instrumental after the second stanza is just genius. The abrupt ending. wow. Stevie Smiths poem was one of my favourites of my schoolboy years. I like how you have creatively joined the dots to weave a fitting tribute to Avicci. #tit4tat

I like these kinda sad lyrics alot - very well constructed, I love the repitions like "Were you waving". Very nice, smooth composition... I like how you start the song with the chorus and establish the hook right away! Also I really love the outro with the sweet harmonies!! Excellent performance and production. Most enjoyable to listen to! #tit4tat

This is a lovely tribute! Very sad, but beautiful and inspiring from your end with all of the crazy and cool synth work dancing around. That ending is wonderful. #tit4tat

Came to this one because I was intriqued by the title, and I'm so glad I did. There's so much to enjoy. I love the double interpretation of waving - for happiness or for help - that is so well explored in the chorus. The noodly little ARP is really exciting when it comes in. And the harmoniser on the vocal is a wonderful touch at the end. Great song.

I was a big fan of Avicii and his death hit me super hard cause he's been same age as me. Digging deeper into his discography you'll notice that he's primarily a songwriter, and I would have been super psyched if he did more acoustic stuff. Thanks for writing a tribute.

Youe lyrics have an interesting double meaning. Really liked them..and the beat bounces! #tit4tat

The art is the person is the art. Some really lovely sonic candy sprinkled about with a cool vocal sound and a music bed that makes me wanna go exploring

[avatar]

Nice bouncy synths, it's energetic yet laid back, I like the little synth interlude section and the vocal effects on the chorus are fun. I like that the outro becomes less sure of itself with every line, works even better when you consider the poem. #tit4tat

Oh Avicii…my seven year old is really into some of his music, it still slaps. I had actually forgotten that he took his own life, just vaguely knew he had stopped making music. I learned something new up top with your background about his name too. A really nice tribute you have here with your lyrics 💚
